26 GHP Q4 2022 Community pharmacist, John Paul Mackie purchased his first pharmacy, Mackie Pharmacy in 1999, and since, he has opened six other pharmacies in the Glasgow area. This is no ordinary pharmacy, it is family-run and shows a dedication to customer excellence like no other, between its devoted, expert team; automated prescription dispensing; 24/7 collection; and free delivery six days a week. Mackie Pharmacy ohn Paul Mackie graduated from Strathclyde University in 1994 and he has worked as a community pharmacist ever since, priding himself in his dedication to both community and his team’s wellbeing. His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed, with him having achieved amazing accolades including the UK Independent Pharmacy of the Year 2021 in Westminster and the UK Parliament Distinction Award. Critical to the success of John’s pharmacies is his team of hardworking, down to earth individuals. Six out of Mackie Pharmacy’s seven pharmacist managers began as weekend students and have worked their way up; they’ve gone from cleaning the toilets to managing the pharmacy. This year, it has three pharmacists in their final foundation year placements who hope to register as pharmacists next year. Thanks to its team’s commitment, members of the community can access services over extended opening hours of 8am-7pm Monday-Friday and 9am-6pm on Saturdays (available at five out of seven Mackie Pharmacy branches). Patients have instant access to pharmacists with a second pharmacist always available 9am-6pm, Monday-Friday, and a third pharmacist available Thursdays and Fridays 9am-6pm who can speak Punjabi. In 2019, the Cardonald branch was relocated 100 yards along the road to a new site, because a larger premises was required in order to introduce dispensary automation in the form of installing a BD Rowa robot. Automation of the dispensing process was integrated with an MDS dispensing robot and 24/7 prescription collection point to take pressure off and free up the team’s time to concentrate on delivering high quality service. As a result, the pharmacists’ roles have become much more rewarding and team moral has improved as they are able to spend more time with patients. Pharmacists also have more capacity to receive GP phone prescriptions and dispense with same-day free delivery if received before 6pm, or load medicines into the machine for collection 24/7. Patients can collect their dispensed medication 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from the storefront prescription points at a time that suits themselves, available at six out of seven Mackie Pharmacy branches. This has proved to be very popular with GP practices that are often consulting remotely. During the pandemic, these options were particularly well-received and needed, especially by keyworkers and those shielding as they can reduce their risk by collecting their medication at quiet times throughout the day or having them delivered. Being structured in this way meant that the pharmacies could maintain its scheduled opening hours and services throughout the pandemic. Indeed, it’s easy to how John Paul Mackie and Mackie Pharmacy have come to achieve such prestigious success, not only in GHP’s Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Awards 2022, but also as mentioned earlier, last year’s Independent Pharmacy Awards, as well as recognition from MPs of the Scottish National Party, Alba Party, and Democratic Unionist Party. Truly dedicated to evolving and exceeding the needs of patients, Mackie Pharmacy plans to explore automation across its other branches. There’s no denying the bright future ahead of it and we are truly rooting for its continued success.
