GHP Q3 2024

30 GHP Q3 2024 In recent years, aesthetic treatments are becoming increasingly popular. As technology advances, more individuals are opting for non-invasive procedures geared towards boosting confidence. When selecting a clinic for treatment, it is crucial to choose a qualified provider with extensive experience in delivering aesthetic laser and IPL treatment. Based in Scotland, Dermalase is the leading provider of training in laser and IPL treatment services. Following the company’s recent recognition in the 2024 Global Excellence Awards, we speak with Lisa McMahon, a spokesperson for Dermalase. Dermalase was founded by Mike Murphy, driven by over three decades of experience within the medical laser industry. Since 1986, Mike has sought to share his knowledge and passion with the world, having been involved in the original scar-free tattoo removal clinical trials in Glasgow. Mike is joined at Dermalase by his daughter, Lisa McMahon, who has trained extensively to support him. Dermalase is a family-run, small business owned by and operated by two individuals who genuinely care about the quality of training provided to laser practitioners. “We are the only training company in the laser and IPL industry, that we know of, whose lead trainer and Director is a physicist who has worked with the technology for over 37 years,” Lisa tells us. “Mike is constantly researching and experimenting with new methods of treatments to gain better, more efficient, and safer results using lasers and IPLs. He has written three books on lasers and IPLs, known as the ‘Laser Bible’ to many people.” As an industry expert, Mike routinely holds talks at the British Medical Laser Association and is a certificated Laser Protection Advisor. Additionally, he has held a position as the General Secretary of the Association of Laser Safety Professionals and the General Secretary of the UK Counsil on Surgical Plume. On a mission to improve the quality of training and safety practices within the laser and IPL industry, Dermalase offers top-tier, one-on-one training courses. Available both in-person and online, these courses are designed for medical professionals, therapists, and other practitioners, placing a focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. By breaking down the physics behind lasers and IPL machines, Dermalase strives to simplify complex concepts in its teaching to make learning accessible and engaging, ensuring industry change. Additionally, the company holds its renowned CPD-accredited Dermalase Masterclass numerous times a year across the UK. The next masterclass will take place in London in October and consists of two days of quality training that covers the fundamentals of lasers and IPL, in addition to the components of laser tattoo removal. Training and courses are delivered by Mike and Lisa, who have undergone extensive training that enables them to ease the process for aspiring practitioners. “There is ongoing discussion about new regulations in the industry, coming in 2026 or thereabouts,” says Lisa. “We believe a more regulated environment is needed for training academies, as we have witness poor training resulting in negative reactions before. As a training provider, we are ensuring our content is exactly what is needed, with extra science to fully gain an understanding. We are in the process of becoming fully accredited with VTCT qualifications so we can offer this to those that require it going forward.” The company aims to have completed its VTCT approval within the next few months, to become a fully VCTC accredited centre and enhance its offerings. This is merely the beginning of Dermalase’s plans for expansion, as the company strives to continue challenging incorrect training methods, unsafe practice, and misleading marketing. Having built a solid reputation for delivering quality training services that combat misinformation, Dermalase has set its sights overseas, with plans to hold its first masterclass in America in early 2025. “We plan to be the largest science-focused laser and IPL training provider in the UK,” Lisa tells us. “We have set our target on that ambitious goal and have started the steps to achieve it. We are based in Scotland, but plan to have training centres around the UK to ensure that all areas can access us easily. We know we have the knowledge, content, and ability to achieve this, it just takes time!” Such ambitious plans require high levels of passion, dedication, and knowledge in order to be achieved. Fortunately, Dermalase has displayed such qualities in abundance, with no plans to slow down its exceptional growth trajectory. We eagerly anticipate the future expansion of Dermalase, a company that has been recognised as the Best Aesthetics Laser Training Provider 2024 – Scotland.
