6 Oral Health & Dentistry 2024 Being a mother is no mean feat, but as a business owner too, Dr Grace Yum felt the need to connect with like-minded entrepreneurs and businesswomen who were also parents. We find out more about Grace, and her organisation Mommy Dentists in Business, as it receives recognition in the Oral Health and Dentistry Awards 2024. Mommy Dentists in Business (MDIB) is a group of Moms who are also dentists. Most of the dentists are business owners and recognise that they are leaders in the industry and responsible for their teams. Started in June 2017 by Dr Grace Yum, the vision of MDIB is to create and nurture a membership platform that can provide services such as educational platforms through the podcast, webinar series, and live events by involving experts in the industry alongside dental and non-dental vendors to bring value to doctors’ lives. “We value time with our family and being mothers and understand that it takes a village to be successful,” Grace explains further. “We are here to support one another and share not only our ideas and resources, but our successes and struggles as well.” It all began whilst Grace was on a business trip with her husband. She noticed how lawyers connected and networked with one another and felt that dentistry was missing that component of camaraderie. Setting up a Facebook group was an initial way to connect dentists from all over the world, especially dentists like herself - moms who are also business owners. Today, the group has more than 10,400 VETTED members, 34 regional chapters, and a wide collection of continuing education, special offers and live events. Grace grew up in Glenview, Illinois and now lives in sunny California. She is a mother and a certified paediatric dentist, a certification achieved by only 5% of all dentists in the US. She is also the former founder and practice owner of Yummy Dental & Orthodontics for Kids and, obviously, the founder and CEO of Mommy Dentists in Business. In addition to managing the MDIB community, Grace hosts her own podcast. With 20 seasons and counting, the podcast has been in the iTunes top 100, was ranked number three of 15 of the top dental podcasts by Patterson Dental’s “Off the Cusp” publication, and has been downloaded more than 300,000 times. She has quietly become nationally recognised in her field and has appeared and was featured on TODAY Show on NBC nationally, NBC Chicago as a repeat guest, Parents Magazine, Parenting Magazine, Chicago Parent Magazine. She has also appeared on many podcasts, with topics covering dentistry, work/life balance and business tips for the working mom. Recently, for its incredible support to the extensive community it has built up over the years, MDIB clinched the prestigious title of Best Female Dentistry Network – USA in the Oral Health and Dentistry Awards 2024. This accolade is a true testament to Grace and the entire team behind the scenes who work hard to ensure that female dentists everywhere can stay connected.
