It has created a fun and exciting dental experience for children to ensure they maintain excellent oral health and positive preventative habits. Always accepting new patients with or without referral, the practice believes that its dentists, parents, and patients are all part of a child’s oral health care team, working together to treat each child in a way that fits their needs and unique family philosophy. The Smile Team was founded by Dr Prabhdeep Chahal, who has over 13 years of experience as a dentist and seven years in paediatric dentistry. She has taken extensive training to become a leader in her field. After finishing an honours degree in Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan in 2003, she completed dental school at the University of Manitoba in 2007. She then practiced general dentistry, seeing both adults and children in Calgary and Ontario. Five years and two kids later, Dr Prabhdeep decided to pursue her passion for paediatric dentistry and began teaching the subject at Western Ontario. She then completed a rigorous residency programme at the State University of New York at Buffalo and became a board certified paediatric dentist in both Canada and the United States. Dr Prabhdeep has always worked with children, whether it was as a camp counsellor, a lifeguard and swim instructor, or a paediatric dentist! She is incredibly passionate about giving the children of the community as much support as possible to help them thrive in all aspects of their life. She continues to learn the most innovative techniques in paediatric dentistry and is an active member of the dental community in Calgary. She currently serves as the President of the Calgary and District Gnathology Study Club and is a member of many other professional organisations in Calgary and across North America. Dr Prabhdeep is joined by a team of professionals who are great with children and understand the importance of them having exceptional oral health, helping to protect and restore children’s teeth to ensure that they don’t affect their speech, nutrition or growth in a negative way. The team works with parents to ensure their children are taking good care of their teeth at home. They provide guidance and can show parents how to raise their children with beautiful teeth and still have a few treats once in a while! The practice’s unique specialised care involves a three-step process which begins with educating the parent on all the treatment options and creating an individualised plan together to address their child’s specific needs; working with the parent to complete treatment in a way that works with their family philosophy; and helping the parent and their child to maintain healthy, cavity-free dental visits in the future using anticipatory guidance and other techniques. Parents are encouraged to participate in promoting a positive attitude towards dentistry and healthy dental habits for the whole family! Alongside the treatments it provides, The Smile Team strives to create a loving community for children to grow up in. This involves providing an oral health education programme for day cares, elementary schools, and mums’ groups; a modern, renovated sports-themed office; free parking; community building events throughout the year; and an annual Christmas party for all patients. Indeed, The Smile Team has made it so children enjoy going to the dentist, and their parents feel relaxed with the knowledge that their children will be taken care of.
