Mental Health Awards 2026

15 GHP Mental Health Awards 2026 My Mind Matters Therapy is a speech pathology and assistive technology clinic based in Adelaide and founded by Amelia back in 2024. Starting out as an assistive technology company, Amelia established the business after witnessing severe communication isolation during her time volunteering in aged care. From the beginning, Amelia made it her mission to make communication accessible for people of all ages, with the evolution of the company’s speech pathology side being an extension of this. Graduating from local Flinders University in 2020, Amelia is a speech pathologist and Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnostician boasting a wealth of expertise across a number of areas, from articulation and language development to social communication skills and dementia. Leveraging her broad range of experience and skill across these areas, Amelia developed her own augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app as well as a cognitive brain training app, recognising a lack of age-appropriate solutions. These AAC apps, both of which have been designed to reduce frustration and isolation by supporting communication across everyday situations, underpin the work that My Mind Matters Therapy does in creating supportive communication environments alongside families and professionals. It does this by providing its services across settings such as schools, clinics, homes, aged care, and community groups. Such a wide coverage sees Amelia and her team support a diverse group of people – from individuals with language disorders to those with autism, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, and degenerative neurological conditions like dementia and childhood dementia. The team also see many adults without a diagnosis who simply want to improve their memory or communication skills, highlighting communication’s universal importance. Exploring this work in more detail, Amelia told us: “Our priority is making sure every service is person-centred. We take a neuro-affirming approach and measure success through participation, confidence, and quality of life. The most meaningful progress Communication is a vital part of our daily lives, and it something closely connected with both mental health and quality of life. For those who are misunderstood or cannot find a way to express themselves, anxiety, isolation, and emotional distress are often close behind. Recognising during her time in care that a lack of communication had a direct impact on a person’s loneliness, Amelia Griffin set about mitigating this through My Matters Therapy. We caught up with Amelia to find out more about this. Assistive Technology Innovator of the Year 2026 (Australia): Amelia Griffin & GHP Excellence Award in Speech Pathology 2026 often comes from understanding what matters to the individual, not just their diagnosis, and being willing to think creatively when traditional pathways are not enough.” Diving into specifics, this includes multimodal communication, workshops, and tools like the AAC apps. “Our overall aim is to reduce barriers to communication before they turn into mental health challenges.” Given the mental health sphere has seen massive shifts in recent years – such as the growing recognition of inclusive and neuroaffirming practice and a greater understanding that alternative communication access does not prevent verbal speech, it actually supports it – My Mind Matters Therapy has doubled down on practical accessibility to ensure that it has the greatest possible impact in this space. Examples include the development of new tools and advocating for improved AAC funding pathways. Amelia explained: “In 2025 I learned how quickly the need for accessible communication support is growing. I also saw first-hand just how powerful community programmes can be in reducing isolation and how valuable collaboration is in strengthening positive outcomes. It reinforced that meaningful change rarely happens alone, it happens when people work together.” As a result, My Mind Matters Therapy is continuing its research collaboration with Flinders University on childhood dementia and assistive technologies. This is just the beginning of My Mind Matters Therapy’s future plans, all of which revolve around creating a world where communication access is not something people must fight for, but a universal standard. Amelia shared: “Too often, loss of communication is misinterpreted as behaviour rather than recognised as a support need. We regularly meet individuals capable of learning, connecting, and participating, but who remain unsupported because the tools around them were never designed for how they communicate.” It is this which this speech pathology and assistive technology clinic in Adelaide is looking to change, and for the transformations it is nurturing across everything from its communication support apps for autism and dementia through to its neuro-affirming speech therapy, we are delighted to recognise My Mind Matters Therapy with these two titles in our GHP Mental Health Awards 2026.
