4 Purple Mountain Recovery Inc. was founded in July 2022 with a core focus and devoted purpose. The non-profit is on a mission to create a safer, more inclusive world for LGBTQIA+ individuals navigating addiction, mental health challenges, and the complex, often non-linear, journey of recovery. The organization’s story unites a powerful blend of lived experience, peer‑led advocacy, and community‑based healing. Here we explore Purple Mountain Recovery’s offerings as it is bestowed with its esteemed title in our Mental Health Awards this year. Purple Mountain Recovery was founded in July 2022 with the mission of providing safe, affirming support to LGBTQIA+ individuals recovering from mental health and addiction issues. The website emphasizes the foundational importance of peer coaching, one of the organization’s core services, which pairs individuals with trained members of the LGBTQIA+ community who have lived experience in long‑term recovery. The organization’s rapidly growing recognition is a testament to the real need it fills in the local community. As a registered 501(c)(3) non‑profit, Purple Mountain Recovery has quickly become one of Colorado’s most trusted LGBTQIA+ support organizations, offering an identity‑affirming environment where individuals can rebuild their lives without judgement or stigma. More than a provider of recovery services, it is a community movement built on compassion, visibility, and shared lived experience. The organization’s model intentionally focuses on connection rather than isolation, a philosophy reflected throughout its programming. Its mission statement, prominently featured on its website, emphasizes fostering connections, securing support, and promoting healing among LGBTQIA+ individuals, an ethos that guides everything the team does. The name Purple Mountain is a heartfelt tribute to the founder’s mother, whose steady presence and unconditional support shaped his recovery. She stood beside him through addiction and mental health struggles, inspiring a vision of a world in which LGBTQIA+ individuals have access to the same safety and understanding he received at home. This story truly forms the emotional foundation of Purple Mountain Recovery’s mission. Her belief in compassionate, identity‑affirming care grew into a community service dedicated to offering others what the founder once needed himself; Purple Mountain Recovery has created a place where people can show up exactly as they are and feel they have a safe space. Under the leadership of founder Scott Mosher‑Ramírez, Purple Mountain Recovery has rapidly expanded into a robust, multi‑service support organization. Scott’s lived experience within the LGBTQIA+ community is woven through the organization’s culture, ensuring that every programme reflects authenticity, inclusivity, and the understanding that healing requires a space where identity is honored not hidden or kept a secret. The organization’s team is composed of LGBTQIA+ members and allies with lived experience in mental health and substance use disorder, further reinforcing the authenticity of their work. Purple Mountain Recovery is staffed by individuals who know first‑hand the barriers and unfair treatment LGBTQIA+ people face in accessing support, from discrimination to lack of cultural competency in mainstream recovery programmes. The organization’s core philosophy includes ensuring equal access to resources; eliminating stigma; meeting people where they are; and providing peer‑led, trauma‑informed support. Purple Mountain Recovery understands that from addiction is difficult and a deeply personal process for anyone, but LGBTQIA+ individuals often face additional layers of complexity Best LGBTQIA+ Community Support Service 2026 - Colorado Recovering Together
GHP Mental Health Awards 2026 rooted in stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion. Purple Mountain Recovery’s services are specifically designed for LGBTQIA+ individuals to deliver identity‑affirming, culturally competent recovery environments, and meaningful outcomes for LGBTQIA+ people. The organization’s positive impact is further strengthened by its partnerships with Diversus Health and Skin Perfect Aesthetics & Wellness; its partnerships broaden the support available to clients and demonstrate the wider community’s investment in LGBTQIA+ people’s overall health and wellbeing. Compared to others, LGBTQ+ people have significantly higher rates of issues frequently linked to discrimination, family rejection, minority stresses, and mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and trauma responses such as PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Within the very beating heart of inclusive recovery is the understanding that LGBTQ+ individuals experience unique stressors that shape their journey toward healing. Traditional treatment programs often overlook people’s realities, forming barriers that discourage individuals from seeking help or fully being able to engage in transformative, compassionate, and respectful care. Inclusive recovery programs intentionally address these inequalities by creating spaces for any and every sexual orientation, gender identity, and diverse lived experiences. These outstanding programs go beyond basic clinical treatment: they integrate identity‑affirming practices and culturally competent support that allow clients to truly engage as who they are, and interact authentically, without fear of judgment or negative consequences. Key award-winning elements of Purple Mountain Recovery include staff trained in LGBTQIA+ cultural competency, their support groups specifically designed for LGBTQIA+ participants, unwavering policies respecting chosen names and pronouns, and mental health services that openly address issues such as trauma based on discernment. By offering these features, inclusive recovery programs ensure participants feel seen, validated, and safe, conditions that are critical for genuine healing. Purple Mountain Recovery
6 emphasizes that something as simple as using correct pronouns or acknowledging diverse identities in treatment plans can dramatically improve trust and emotional comfort, strengthening outcomes. The need for such approaches becomes clear when considering the challenges LGBTQIA+ individuals disproportionately encounter throughout their recovery journeys. Many people may face rejection from families, faith communities, or peers, leading to profound loneliness that can fuel ill mental health or even substance misuse. However, with inclusive, respectful, and empathetic recovery programs results in recovery that is not only more accessible but more effective, empowering individuals to flourish as their authentic, and healthy, selves. “At Purple Mountain Recovery Inc. we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for ALL individuals who are dealing with mental health and addiction issues to discover and navigate their recovery journey.” The Purple Mountain Recovery team’s commitment is visible across all of their services, which emphasize the organization’s aim to erase stigma surrounding addiction, harm reduction, mental health, and recovery both within and beyond the LGBTQIA+ community. Purple Mountain Recovery is home to an excellent and expanding portfolio of services, including Sober Living Homes (CARR‑Certified Levels 1 to 4) which are well-structured, LGBTQIA+‑affirming spaces crafted to support individuals during their early and long‑term recovery. From support from peers and coaching for recovery to group support and drop‑in services, peer academy and scholarships to partial hospitalization program (launched 2026), and more, Purple Mountain Recovery is well-equipped to offer community gatherings, workshops, and support groups form the social backbone of the organization, providing connection and accountability; training for individuals to become recovery coaches themselves, creating a self‑sustaining cycle of community empowerment; and a new programme presenting intensive support for mental health, substance use, and co‑occurring disorders, open to clients regardless of ability to pay. These services reflect a holistic understanding of recovery, grounded firmly in community care and LGBTQIA+ identity affirmation. Delivered by trained coaches with personal recovery experience, this service ensures clients have relatable and experienced mentors supporting their journey every step of the way. The impact extends beyond individual transformation, such as reducing stigma through education and advocacy; increasing access to culturally competent recovery care; breaking isolation by creating sober, identity‑affirming social spaces; supporting legal system navigation, as several testimonials describe improved outcomes when clients receive guidance from peer coaches; and expanding mental health training for professionals, such as sponsorship of group facilitation workshops for therapists and SUD counselors in Colorado Springs.
GHP Mental Health Awards 2026 From its peer‑led services to its expanding housing support, Purple Mountain Recovery is shaping a more inclusive recovery landscape across Colorado. As Purple Mountain Recovery looks toward the future, its focus remains clear. It is expanding safe spaces, increasing access to care, and continuing to nurture a recovery community where every LGBTQIA+ individual is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. The organization’s growth, from sober living services to expanded clinical programmes, reflects a deep commitment to meeting evolving community needs. Its recognition in the Mental Health Awards 2026 is not only well‑deserved, it is a celebration of what happens when compassion, lived experience, and community advocacy truly unite to create something bigger and better than ever before. Purple Mountain Recovery is more than a service; Purple Mountain Recovery is a lifeline, a community, and, for many, it is the first, or perhaps only, place where recovery feels truly possible. “A strong support system makes things happen!” With just a few examples, some individuals shared: “I could not be happier with all the help I have received at PMR. My coach is amazing, and I always feel safe and welcome when I come to the office or groups!” “PMR’s sober living has given me a chance to be in a sober living home where I cannot be afraid to be myself. All the support at the house and office has really helped me in my recovery! I finally feel safe!” “Navigating the court system and probation has been so much easier this time with the help of my coach. The knowledge they have of the justice system has helped me tremendously. I am thankful for having someone to walk beside me this time.” “Purple Mountain Recovery fosters connections, secures support, and promotes healing in our LGBTQIA+ community, always #BreakingDownSilos.” Bestowed with the prestigious title of Best LGBTQIA+ Community Support Service 2026 in Colorado, Purple Mountain Recovery continues to establish itself as a reliable, committed, and passionate source of help and support for individuals across the area and beyond. 8 Relationship counselling can oftentimes be daunting, sparking fears that therapy means the relationship will come to an end. For some, it brings up feelings of failure, as if accepting help in their relationship is weak. A relationship counsellor must create a sense of safety for these couples, showing them that this process is actually a commitment to addressing these challenges before it is too late. This is an ethos well understood by HSP Therapy, ran by dedicated Director and Psychotherapist Hildah Makoni. We sat down with Hildah to find out more about her practice, as HSP Therapy receives recognition in the GHP Mental Health Awards 2026. Based in Bury, Greater Manchester, HSP Therapy is a respected counselling service that places its client’s wellbeing at the heart of its operations. The practice provides clients with a secure and confidential setting in which they can freely express themselves, empowering each client on their journey with a nonjudgmental and empathetic approach to counselling. HSP Therapy is operated by Dr Hildah Makoni, an experienced counsellor with an extensive background in person centred counselling, couples therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, art therapy, brief therapies, trauma therapy, drugs and alcohol therapy, and bereavement. Utilising evidence-based therapeutic methods within a safe, warm environment, Hildah plays a powerful role in helping her clients overcome obstacles, strengthen communication, and rebuild relational harmony. Boasting more than 18 years of experience as an Integrative Counsellor, backed by an additional 27 years as a Registered General Nurse, Hildah possesses strong communication skills that allow her to easily establish individual client needs. Hildah leverages her invaluable background in her work with individual and couple clients alike, preparing and delivering the appropriate treatments and therapy plans in alignment with their needs. At the core of HSP Therapy’s offerings is its approach to relationship therapy. Hildah deploys Imago Relationship Therapy, which is a powerful therapeutic methodology designed to foster understanding, healing, and intimacy in relationships. It enables couples to get to the true root of their problems, uncovering their underlying emotions and improving the ways in which they communicate with one another. Imago Relationship Therapy works by focusing on transforming conflict into healing and growth through relationship connection. The therapy is based on the idea that feelings experienced in childhood relationships can resurface in adult relationships, influencing how partners relate, behave, and respond. The method aims to help couples stop negatively reacting to each other and instead become more understanding and empathetic. This offering can benefit couples who are trying to improve their relationships and become closer to their partners, as well as individuals in need of communication skills that will help them generally better their relationships. Alongside Imago Relationship Therapy, Hildah additionally provides therapy to individuals who have been subject to cheating, betrayal, affairs, and relationship trauma, helping them to emotionally recover and move on to healthy and harmonious relationships. With extensive education and training in a number of areas, Hildah also offers guidance to individuals experiencing a wide variety of life’s challenges. She utilises cognitive behavioural therapy when counselling clients facing depression and anxiety, helping them to identify their triggers and change negative thought patterns and behaviours. She also educates her clients on positive mindfulness and behavioural techniques that will aid them in their journey to finding inner peace and acceptance. Furthermore, Hildah also specialises in providing tailored counselling and emotional support to individuals who are struggling with substance abuse. Addiction is a complex issue that can cause immense amounts of emotional and physical pain, whether an addiction to gambling, shopping, substance abuse, or others. Hildah helps her clients take that important first step to recovery by providing them with the tools they need to recognise the signs of their addiction and develop the essential skills that will help them manage their emotions and behaviours. Hildah works closely with her clients to distinguish the deep rooted causes of their addictions and provides them with strategies to overcome the habits that are disrupting their lives. With HSP Therapy’s unwavering support, individuals can develop an understanding of their addiction and form the coping mechanisms they need to break free. This is a similar experience for clients navigating trauma and PTSD. HSP Therapy offers a safe and supportive environment for them to process their traumatic experiences, utilising evidencebased treatments such as EMDR, trauma-focused CBT, and mindfulness-based therapies to provide them with insight and understanding of their traumatic experiences so they can move towards healing. With such extensive experience under her belt, Hildah also applies her knowledge to shape the next generation of professionals within the industry. She delivers supervisory sessions that help aspiring counsellors reach their professional goals, become compliant with BACP standards, and transform into a confident, skilled, and up-to-date counsellor. Since establishing HSP Therapy, Hildah has worked tirelessly to create a safe space for clients to work through their problems and progress on their healing journey. 10 Many people believe that seeking professional help for their mental health will be perceived as a weakness. In fact, it is often their greatest moment of strength. Mental health professionals work to equip their clients with the invaluable tools they need to begin their healing process, and Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching is no exception. Driven by a commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for clients to overcome their hurdles, the Canadian mental health practice has earned a name for its deeply personalised approach to helping clients achieve balance and fulfilment. As Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching is named in the GHP Mental Health Awards 2026, Founder and CEO Hana Khalaf told us more. “Healing requires courage, from the client and from the therapist. Our role is to meet that courage with steadiness, responsibility, and respect.” Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching is a multi-province mental health practice providing psychotherapy to individuals, couples, adolescents, and families across six provinces in Canada, through both in-person and virtual services. The practice was founded on the belief that meaningful healing can only occur when clinical excellence meets compassion and structure, a belief that has shaped its dedication to delivering high-quality, ethical, and deeply human-centred counselling and coaching services. The practice is owned and operated by Founder and CEO Hana Khalaf, a Master Therapeutic Counsellor MTC, Registered Counselling Supervisor – RCS, and a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. Hana specialises in emotional and mental health challenges, striving to create a safe and supportive space for individuals and couples to discover their hidden potential and heal. She is passionate about helping her clients overcome obstacles, fostering personal growth and wellbeing in her approach to mental health. Hana oversees a team comprised of licensed psychologists, therapists, and counsellors, each possessing extensive experience in diverse areas of mental health. Across the practice’s locations throughout Canada, the Restorative Wellness team focuses on empowering clients to move through difficulty with greater selfawareness, steadiness, and a clearer sense of who they are becoming. Its work spans trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, emotional regulation, identity, and life transition. Within these areas of specialism, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching supports professionals, parents, teens, couples in distress, and individuals simply seeking to better understand themselves. Each new client engagement begins with an in-depth consultation, which allows the therapist to better understand their unique needs, challenges, and goals for the process. From there, the practice develops a personalised treatment plan that outlines the therapeutic techniques to be used within sessions, tailored directly to the information gleaned from the consultation. Once a plan has been created, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching embarks on stage three of the journey. The client will engage in regular therapy sessions in which they work alongside their therapist to address their various challenges. Continuous support and evaluation are upheld as the client moves forward on their journey, with the practice monitoring and adjusting the treatment plan to ensure it remains aligned with the client’s journey. At every stage of the healing journey, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching maintains equal levels of compassion and compliance. “What matters most to us is that people feel safe, respected, and truly heard,” Hana shared. “At the same time, we operate with clear systems and strong ethics. Mental health care should be compassionate, but it should also be structured and accountable.” This ethos is echoed throughout Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching’s organisational structure, reflecting back on its internal culture. Skills are, of course, important in this field of work, but Mental Health Practice of the Year 2026 – Canada & GHP Ethical Leadership & Social Impact Excellence Award 2026 Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching Inc.
GHP Mental Health Awards 2026 the practice also champions self-awareness as an essential quality for its team. Each clinician at Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching must know their own patterns, limits, and emotional reactions, with ongoing supervision and honest reflection serving as crucial components of protecting the practice’s service standards. Furthermore, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching has made extensive efforts to protect the structure and stability of its services. The team champions clear boundaries, ethical discipline, and steadiness to create a safe space for clients and employees alike. In this respect, it understands that people heal best when they are in an environment that feels contained and secure, not loose and uncertain. This approach stems from Hana’s own experience building practices across six provinces in Canada. She learned that talent alone is not enough for success in this space, witnessing firsthand as skilled therapists burned out due to unclear limits, a lack of containment, blurred roles, and overextension. This perspective changed the ways in which she leads Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching, making her team wholly intentional about maintaining boundaries, professional responsibility, and emotional maturity. Hana retains this perspective when expanding the team, opting to hire for maturity over hiring for brilliance. “Technical skill can be taught and refined. Character is harder to shape,” she explained. “We look for clinicians who are self-reflective, accountable, and able to tolerate feedback without defensiveness. Someone who knows they are still becoming.” Through 2025, Hana and her team were reminded that expansion must be supported by structure, as growth without depth will only ever create strain on all involved. This year, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching will put its knowledge into practice, with plans to strengthen its multi-province operations. Alongside this, the team will also launch Mastering Therapy™ Business School, a programme designed to help health care professionals build practices that are not only compassionate but also sustainable. This is yet another example of Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching’s overarching mission to build a legacy of ethical care, professional excellence, and global compassion. The practice commits its net profits to the Myrrh Tree Foundation, a nonprofit organisation founded with the aim of building mental health hospitals and ending the inhumane chaining of individuals living with mental illness in Africa. This commitment has transformed everyday clinical work into a global act of service. With proceeds from each session going to the foundation, clients and clinicians alike are motivated by the knowledge that their healing will make a direct contribution towards restoring hope, dignity, and access to care for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. For the exceptional work already done in empowering underserved communities, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching has been awarded the GHP Ethical Leadership and Social Impact Excellence Award 2026. Whilst this philanthropic work is endlessly rewarding for the practice and its clients, it also brings its own unique series of challenges to the team, requiring them to balance financial sustainability with social impact. Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching must operate with strong operational discipline and long-term planning. The team has met this challenge head-on over the years through expansion into new provinces, investment in therapist education, and the development of scalable training and educational resources that strengthen both clinical excellence and organisational resilience. Ultimately, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching’s alignment between clinical work and global service has significantly strengthened its organisational culture whilst reinforcing the deeper purpose behind its ongoing growth. Its ongoing support of the Myrrh Tree Foundation routinely informs how care is delivered locally, reinforcing a strong culture of dignity, responsibility, and service within every therapeutic relationship. In turn, providing clients with a nurturing environment in which they feel safe and secure as they heal. Since its inception in 2018, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching has demonstrated its ability to grow responsibly, support therapists, and deliver meaningful client outcomes, all whilst contributing to systemic change on both a local and a global scale. Having built a strong network of professionals dedicated to empowering clients, Hana Khalaf has demonstrated the importance of strong leadership within mental health care and has proven that this line of work can in fact be clinically excellent, financially responsible, ethically led, and globally compassionate at the same time. “This work is deeply human,” Hana concluded. “People bring their vulnerability, their trauma, their relationships. That requires more than empathy; it requires steadiness, clear boundaries, and professional responsibility. I believe therapists must continue growing personally while holding clear standards professionally. When leadership is thoughtful and disciplined, clients feel safer. That balance, humanity and responsibility, is what matters most to me.” For its exceptional work in reshaping the standards of mental health care across Canada, whilst simultaneously empowering countless communities in Africa, Restorative Wellness Counselling & Coaching has been named Canada’s Mental Health Practice of the Year 2026. Hana is also the author of two books: Mastering Therapy: 30 Step-by-Step Plans for Better Client Care and a Practice That Lasts (2026), and What a Privilege to Be Alive!: Morning Texts, Daily Gratitude, 42 Stories of Transformation, both available on Amazon. She has also spoken at the House of Lords about the role of occupational therapy in supporting children with attachment and trauma difficulties, highlighting her advocacy and leadership within the profession. Within Achieve Occupational Therapy Ltd, Claire leads a team of highly skilled occupational therapy assistants and associate occupational therapists, all dedicated to providing exemplary services. The team’s exceptional communication skills and ability to apply therapeutic use of self and self-regulation principles enable them to engage meaningfully even with the most challenging clients. By reading body language and physiological symptoms of stress, they build trusted relationships with children and their families, fostering empathy and supporting developmental progress. Achieve also collaborates with numerous UK charities and offers six hours of free occupational therapy annually to local schools, supporting training, assessments, and drop-in sessions, thereby reinforcing its community commitment. One of Claire’s notable innovations is the development of the Tree of Trust, co-created with one of her most complex clients. This model illustrates the extensive effort required for a child with complex trauma to build a trusting therapeutic relationship. The young client, after seven years out of school and limited social interaction, made significant progress over two years through walking, talking, and sensory nature-based interventions, ultimately entering specialist college and continuing to thrive. The Tree of Trust is now used widely to help educators, practitioners, parents, and carers understand trust development and the necessity of relational support to rebuild lost trust, facilitating engagement in daily life. Occupational therapy is crucial in addressing complex trauma, attachment, sensory, and developmental challenges. Claire Ginty exemplifies the highest standards of practice in this field. Rather than working purely from diagnosis, the team develops comprehensive biopsychosocial formulations that guide all treatment planning. Multidisciplinary collaboration is central to this approach, with regular case reviews, structured risk management, and measurable outcome tracking prioritised to ensure accountability and progress across its treatments. This model has been strongly influenced by Robert’s own experience leading large-scale mental health and child protection programmes, working within highly regulated environments that required rigorous governance, safeguarding frameworks, and outcome-based delivery. At the same time, the CEO’s clinical background in psychology and trauma-informed practice reinforces the centre’s emphasis on long-term recovery over shortterm symptom reduction alone. The result is a department that combines clinical precision with strong governance, delivering structured and sustainable mental health care. This commitment to governance has become central to The Beekeeper House’s work, with all treatment plans individualised, regularly reviewed in MDT settings, and guided by measurable progress indicators. Robert stated: “Clinical excellence in mental health must be built on governance, not branding. In a rapidly expanding private behavioural health market, there is an increasing need for structured oversight, transparent outcomes, and ethical accountability. We believe that this is where The Beekeeper House differentiates itself.” For The Beekeeper House, 2025 was a year of consolidation and refinement. It reinforced to the team that sustainable growth in mental health must be built upon governance, measurable outcomes. and workforce stability. The centre invested heavily in strengthening its clinical systems, formalising quality assurance processes, and deepening the team’s multidisciplinary collaboration. One of the key lessons learned was that scaling without structure risks dilution, leading The Beekeeper House to prioritise internal robustness over rapid expansion. Looking ahead, the focus has shifted toward thoughtful growth. The Beekeeper House is currently exploring potential expansion opportunities, both in terms of service diversification and geographic reach. Any growth implemented will remain clinically led, ensuring that the standards, culture, and governance frameworks for which the centre has defined itself are replicated with integrity and not speed. This development will represent significant strides in The Beekeeper House’s mission to shape standards throughout the industry with ethical practice, innovation, and disciplined systems. “If expansion proceeds, it will be measured and values aligned,” Robert concluded. “Our ambition is not simply to increase footprint, but to raise the standard of private behavioural health provision in the region. 2026, for us, represents strategic scaling grounded in the lessons of disciplined practice learned in 2025.” Contact: Robert Common Company: The Beekeeper House Web Address: www.beekeeperhouse.com Best Holistic Mental Health & Addiction Treatment Centre 2026 – Thailand
15 GHP Mental Health Awards 2026 My Mind Matters Therapy is a speech pathology and assistive technology clinic based in Adelaide and founded by Amelia back in 2024. Starting out as an assistive technology company, Amelia established the business after witnessing severe communication isolation during her time volunteering in aged care. From the beginning, Amelia made it her mission to make communication accessible for people of all ages, with the evolution of the company’s speech pathology side being an extension of this. Graduating from local Flinders University in 2020, Amelia is a speech pathologist and Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnostician boasting a wealth of expertise across a number of areas, from articulation and language development to social communication skills and dementia. Leveraging her broad range of experience and skill across these areas, Amelia developed her own augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app as well as a cognitive brain training app, recognising a lack of age-appropriate solutions. These AAC apps, both of which have been designed to reduce frustration and isolation by supporting communication across everyday situations, underpin the work that My Mind Matters Therapy does in creating supportive communication environments alongside families and professionals. It does this by providing its services across settings such as schools, clinics, homes, aged care, and community groups. Such a wide coverage sees Amelia and her team support a diverse group of people – from individuals with language disorders to those with autism, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, and degenerative neurological conditions like dementia and childhood dementia. The team also see many adults without a diagnosis who simply want to improve their memory or communication skills, highlighting communication’s universal importance. Exploring this work in more detail, Amelia told us: “Our priority is making sure every service is person-centred. We take a neuro-affirming approach and measure success through participation, confidence, and quality of life. The most meaningful progress Communication is a vital part of our daily lives, and it something closely connected with both mental health and quality of life. For those who are misunderstood or cannot find a way to express themselves, anxiety, isolation, and emotional distress are often close behind. Recognising during her time in care that a lack of communication had a direct impact on a person’s loneliness, Amelia Griffin set about mitigating this through My Matters Therapy. We caught up with Amelia to find out more about this. Assistive Technology Innovator of the Year 2026 (Australia): Amelia Griffin & GHP Excellence Award in Speech Pathology 2026 often comes from understanding what matters to the individual, not just their diagnosis, and being willing to think creatively when traditional pathways are not enough.” Diving into specifics, this includes multimodal communication, workshops, and tools like the AAC apps. “Our overall aim is to reduce barriers to communication before they turn into mental health challenges.” Given the mental health sphere has seen massive shifts in recent years – such as the growing recognition of inclusive and neuroaffirming practice and a greater understanding that alternative communication access does not prevent verbal speech, it actually supports it – My Mind Matters Therapy has doubled down on practical accessibility to ensure that it has the greatest possible impact in this space. Examples include the development of new tools and advocating for improved AAC funding pathways. Amelia explained: “In 2025 I learned how quickly the need for accessible communication support is growing. I also saw first-hand just how powerful community programmes can be in reducing isolation and how valuable collaboration is in strengthening positive outcomes. It reinforced that meaningful change rarely happens alone, it happens when people work together.” As a result, My Mind Matters Therapy is continuing its research collaboration with Flinders University on childhood dementia and assistive technologies. This is just the beginning of My Mind Matters Therapy’s future plans, all of which revolve around creating a world where communication access is not something people must fight for, but a universal standard. Amelia shared: “Too often, loss of communication is misinterpreted as behaviour rather than recognised as a support need. We regularly meet individuals capable of learning, connecting, and participating, but who remain unsupported because the tools around them were never designed for how they communicate.” It is this which this speech pathology and assistive technology clinic in Adelaide is looking to change, and for the transformations it is nurturing across everything from its communication support apps for autism and dementia through to its neuro-affirming speech therapy, we are delighted to recognise My Mind Matters Therapy with these two titles in our GHP Mental Health Awards 2026.
