20 GHP Mental Health Awards 2024 A Personal Calling Having been recognised by Global Health and Pharma as Australia’s best anxiety and depression counsellor in 2023 and 2024, we sat down with Leon Skaliotis – the man behind the private counselling practice Be Happy Again – to get to know him better. What inspired you to specialise in anxiety and depression counselling? My journey into the realm of anxiety and depression counselling was not just a professional choice but a personal calling. Having endured the depths of extreme anxiety and depression myself, I’ve experienced firsthand the profound impact it can have on one’s life and the ripple effects it sends through a family. This personal battle instilled in me a fervent desire to dedicate my life to helping others navigate through their darkest times. My mission is to be a beacon of hope and a source of strength for those who are struggling and to foster a world where no one has to face the journey alone. Learn the skills, recover, and help others, is my message to each client. How do you tailor your counselling techniques to address anxiety and depression specifically? In my counselling practice, I employ a blend of evidence-based techniques tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) help clients to identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviours. Mindfulness is also integral, fostering a sense of presence and calm. Additionally, I incorporate elements of Positive Psychology to help clients build resilience and focus on their strengths. Each session is a collaborative journey, where I work alongside my clients to empower them and develop crucial habits and strategies that promote healing and growth. It’s a holistic approach that addresses the presenting symptoms and nurtures the person’s overall long-term well-being. Can you share a success story from your practice? The following is a review from one of my clients. “Just 4 weeks ago, I was stuck; I had no drive for anything and thought I had no purpose. I was a negative wreck and was pushing my loved ones away. As soon as I met Leon, I felt hope for the first time in a long time. After only taking 4 sessions, I feel so different and have already developed positive habits. I was always against therapy or getting help for mental health, but Leon was very helpful and took his time. Now, I will never look back. I will continue working with Leon because he keeps me accountable, and I always feel I’m becoming a better person after our sessions.” The latest news is that this client has graduated from university, is working professionally, has married, and will move into their own home in a few days. How do you assess a client’s needs and create personalised treatment plans? Tailoring counselling techniques to address anxiety and depression specifically involves a nuanced understanding of these conditions, drawn from years of study and my personal experiences. Throughout the therapeutic process, I remain adaptive, continuously assessing and adjusting the methods to fit the evolving needs of my clients. It’s a dynamic, empathetic approach aimed at providing the most effective support for those grappling with these challenging mental health issues. What strategies do you use to empower clients in managing their anxiety and depression long-term? I have discovered that there are a number of essentials to having and maintaining well-being. Establishing crucial daily habits is a cornerstone in managing anxiety and depression. Awareness of ‘mental time travelling’ will empower individuals to live in the present moment and focus on what they can control. Navigating their thoughts and emotions more effectively will lead to helpful actions. Principled living, which involves aligning one’s actions with their values and beliefs, will provide a sense of purpose and direction. These are some of the strategies that, when personalised and practised consistently, support clients in successfully managing their mental health challenges and achieving a more balanced and fulfilling life. Leon Skaliotis prides himself on being compassionate, supportive, and, most importantly, effective. “There exists no greater joy than the profound satisfaction that comes from easing the burden of suffering for others,” he says.
