He has been the Chairman of the Scientific Committee for COVID-19. Alessandro also served a six-year term as a representative of the Swiss Medical Association (FMH) elected by the Federal Council at the Federal Drug Commission of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. Appointed as an expert for the World Health Organization for the organisation’s Medication Without Harm initiative, he is a member of the WHO Global Patient Safety Network. Alessandro is also the author of several articles published in scientific peer-reviewed journals, an expert for the first Swiss National Report on Quality and Safety in Healthcare commissioned by the Swiss FOPH and was awarded the first Swiss Innovation & Quality Award, Patient Safety Category by the Swiss Academy for Quality in Medicine and the Swiss Patient Safety Foundation. In addition, Professor Ceschi is a consultant at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University Hospital Zurich, Professor of Medicine in clinical pharmacology and toxicology at the Università della Svizzera Italiana and a senior lecturer in clinical pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Zurich and University of Basel. He also regularly supervises numerous young researchers and students for both doctoral and master’s thesis work. As EOC approaches completion of its current projects to consolidate the dimension of a cantonal hospital based on the concept of multisite healthcare providers and moves towards a university- based strategy, Professor Ceschi and his team at the ISFSI continue to work hard to contribute their valuable research to the EOC as a whole. Ceschi, M.D., M.Sc., EuCP, FEAPCCT of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC), is now being recognised as the Best Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Specialist in Central Europe at the International Life Science Awards. Alessandro is, among other duties, a Chief Physician andMedical and Scientific Director of EOC, amultidisciplinary organisation created to ensure the best hospital care at affordable costs for the population of the Southern cantons of Switzerland. EOC (Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale) is a multisite hospital, organised and managed as modern and cutting-edge company to provide services that benefit patients. The Institute of Pharmacological Sciences of Southern Switzerland (ISFSI) is a branch of EOC that includes the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology and its subsidiary clinical services such as the Pharmacogenomics and Pharmacogenetics Unit, the Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre, a small Research Unit, and the Central Pharmacy Service. Advising departments and healthcare professionals on safe drug use and rational use of medicines, the institute’s principal goal is to personalise drug therapy by optimising beneficial effects, whilst minimising adverse effects and costs. Research is currently focused on pharmacoepidemiology and improving drug safety of medications, and the team’s expertise in using large pharmacovigilance databases, such as the WHO global database of suspected adverse drug reactions, is enabling them to begin using real-world data from clinical registries and administrative databases to perform record-linkage studies. The ISFSI was established in 2017 and is led by Professor Alessandro E. Ceschi, M.D., M.Sc., EuCP, FEAPCCT, Chief Physician and Medical and Scientific Director and recipient of the Best Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Specialist award at the International Life Science Awards 2020.
