30 GHP Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Awards 2025 ased in the Midlands, Mr Malek’s journey in the profession dates back to 1998, when he earned his medical degree in Baroda, India. This followed by junior training in Merseyside, senior registrar orthopaedic training in Wales and fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty and reconstruction from Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. Mr Malek was a part of the NHS until late 2018 – he worked mainly out of the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust in Stoke-on-Trent – but transitioned to private practice full time thereafter. Nevertheless, he does continue to see NHS patients through its e-Referral Service, which allows patients to choose the hospital or clinic they wish to be treated at. Since Mr Malek’s focus is on hips and knees, many of the patients he sees, both NHS and private, suffer with osteoarthritis. He also performs knee arthroscopy surgery including ACL reconstructions. A high-volume surgeon mainly carrying out primary joint replacements on the hips and knees, Mr Malek’s impressive rate of replacement procedures performed between April 2021 and March 2024 is unmatched, with no other surgeon coming close. Mr Malek’s number of 1,689 spans mainly hip replacements, total and partial knee replacements – 753, 547, and 363, respectively – but he has also completed 26 revisions. Combined, these figures result in Mr Malek having the highest volume of recorded surgeries in his field in the UK. Although NJR UK doesn’t produce a league table of surgeons, based on their published data, Mr Malek performed 699 joint replacements in last 12 months (April 23 – March 24) which is the highest number by any surgeon in a year since NJR UK started recording the data 25 years ago. The theme continues for the current year with 670 replacements from April 24 to March 25. Mr Malek works primarily across Rowley Hall Hospital and West Midlands Hospital – both of which are owned and operated by Ramsay Health Care UK. Recently, Mr Malek started the Day Surgery Joint Replacement Programme at Stafford Hospital and achieved a recognition from British Association of Day Surgery for completing 100 surgeries within 9 months. The unit was praised for excellent team work and very high success rate along with remarkable patient satisfaction. B Specialising in hip and knee replacements, Mr Sabur Malek is – according to data published by the National Joint Registry (NJR) – the highest volume surgeon for hip and knee replacements in the UK. With a focus on minimally invasive procedures and using the Enhanced Recovery Pathway (ERP), Sabur has received acclaim from his patients and the wider industry alike, solidifying him as a fitting recipient of these two awards and a place in this programme. The outstanding patient experience provided by Mr Malek at every turn is reflected through his recognition as delivering such through Doctify – a leading healthtech platform connecting patients with professionals – where he boasts nearly 700 reviews. 99% of the reviews are five-star, and he has not received any rating lower than four stars on the site. Just some of the stellar feedback Sabur has received includes this review from a verified patient earlier this month. They said: “Fantastic experience from start to finish. I’m now pain free for the first time in years. I was back at work in just over three weeks. Mr Malek replaced my left hip in February and my right hip 12 years ago – I’d highly recommend him if you need hip surgery.” Another patient wrote: “Mr Malek is a really nice man who is very professional but also manages to be kind and helpful. I trust him explicitly.” Mr Malek was first nominated for our awards in 2018 and was successful in winning the best Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Staffordshire. He won two more awards since but this year’s nomination has been special – going national. Sabur Malek’s combination of being a master at his craft and a kind, friendly person makes him the UK’s leading surgeon for hip and knee replacements. Combined with his ability to complete a high volume of these procedures without sacrificing on the quality of patient outcomes, it is clear that this is a man who is fitting of being recognised as the best in his class. More information about both Sabur and his work can be found at the NJR website, through Doctify, or on his LinkedIn profile. ‘I would like to thank each and every member of our team at both hospitals, clinical and management, for providing me the platform and foundation to build a successful practice – including Dr Sockalingam for his brilliant anaesthetic technique to make this possible. Reaching nearly 700 joint replacements was never a target as I don’t treat patients as numbers. Efficiency is the key word here. The team manages to perform 7 replacements in 10 hours theatre session. It took us few years to reach here from 4 joint replacement a day with very limited bed capacity. The introduction of successful Day-case replacements programme has made a huge difference in improving the productivity. My surgical technique has a very important role to play too. I would like to thank all my consultant trainers who taught me the surgical skills as building blocks of my surgical technique DNA. I am proud of my minimally invasive hip replacement approach which is more accurately described as ‘STAR’ approach (Superior Transverse Atraumatic Reconstruction). I would like to thank Global Pharma Team to recognise my work for last 7 years.’ Mr Malek.
