CIUSSS West-Central Montreal makes this commitment in the interests of providing all recipients with the highest quality of health care and social services. When the healthcare network came into existence in 2015, a shared Statement of Mission and Values was developed by a team representing all of the departments and programs, in collaboration with patients’ representatives. This initiative, undertaken in order to create a unified vision for CIUSSS West-Central Montreal, was supported by the network’s ethicist under the supervision of the Department of Quality, Evaluation, Performance, Ethics and Archives. The hospital is also affiliated with McGill University, one of Canada’s best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world. With students coming to McGill from some 150 countries, our student body is the most internationally diverse of any research-intensive university in the country. McGill was founded in 1821 thanks to a generous bequest by James McGill, and since then, has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties, some 300 programs of study, and more than 37,500 students. The University also partners with four affiliated teaching hospitals, including the JGH, to graduate over 1,000 health care professionals each year. Committed to the highest standards of patient care, teaching and research, the JGH has earned a reputation for excellence in many clinical specialties. Its mission is to provide general and specialized care of the highest quality in a safe, humane and caring manner, with an emphasis on specialized and ultra- specialized care; to develop and promote an environment for leadership and excellence in health sciences education; to encourage and support research in order to advance the knowledge of the prevention, cause and treatment of illness and health; an and finally, to actively participate in and lead the development and evaluation of new technologies in order to enhance patient care. In order to achieve these ambitious aims, the hospital needs strong, dedicated leadership. Director of the Emergency Department and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University, Marc Afilalo is among these leaders, and drawing on over 30 years’ experience supporting the University and its teaching hospitals, is able to drive innovative and ensure that the department remains at the forefront of the latest market developments in order to provide patients with the very highest standard of cutting edge care. Ultimately, based on a philosophy of providing ‘Care for All’, the JGH respects the concerns of all religions, cultures and ethnic communities. Although the hospital is a non-sectarian institution, it maintains an environment that respects the culture and the spiritual and religious beliefs of the Jewish faith, and moving forward it will be looking to continue to offer the very highest standards of care to every one of its patients.
