The warehouse space wasn’t appropriate for the long-term housing of animals, so Alberta SPCA closed it down and moved the remaining animals to local animal shelters around Alberta. When the reunion process ended on June 30th, only 38 animals (3% of the total intake) remained unclaimed. “It took a lot of people to make the animal evacuee reunion operation a success,” said Lines. “Our animal welfare partners tapped into their networks of volunteers to meet the need.” In all, 443 volunteers helped at the reunion centre, with 52 of them coming from Edmonton Humane Society. Other volunteers and assistance were provided by the Calgary Humane Society, Red Deer and District SPCA, Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force, Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, Zoe’s Animal Rescue Society, Humane Animal Rescue Team, CaliCan Rescue Foundation, Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society, Saving Grace Animal Sanctuary, Barrhead Animal Rescue Society and many other individual volunteers.
